Veterinary Nutrition and Diet Advice at Home in London

Veterinary nutrition advice at home in London helps owners choose a safe, practical diet based on their dog or cat’s age, body condition, lifestyle and medical needs. Home Vets London provides mobile assessments in familiar surroundings, where feeding routines and weight-management challenges can be discussed in detail.

Nutrition is an important part of preventive healthcare, but there is no single best diet for every pet. Recommendations should consider the whole animal, including current weight, muscle condition, activity, medication, digestive history and any diagnosed disease.

What does a veterinary nutrition assessment include?

The vet will review what your pet eats, portion sizes, treats, supplements and recent changes in appetite or weight. A physical examination and body-condition assessment help determine whether weight loss, weight gain or maintenance is appropriate.

If an underlying medical problem is suspected, diagnostic tests may be recommended before a diet plan is finalised. Unexplained weight change, excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea or altered appetite should not be managed by changing food alone.

Weight management for dogs and cats

Excess weight can affect mobility, comfort and general health. A structured plan may include an appropriate daily calorie allowance, measured portions, controlled treats, gradual activity changes and regular progress checks. Weight loss should be steady and supervised; severe restriction can be unsafe, particularly for cats.

Underweight pets also require careful assessment. Dental pain, digestive disease, hormonal disorders and other conditions can contribute to weight loss, so identifying the cause is important.

Nutrition for different life stages

Puppies and kittens

Growing animals need a complete, balanced diet appropriate for their species, age and expected adult size. Feeding plans should support healthy growth without excessive calorie or mineral intake.

Adult pets

Adult dogs and cats benefit from portions adjusted to activity, neuter status and body condition. Regular reviews can identify gradual weight gain before it becomes a larger problem.

Senior pets

Older pets may experience changes in appetite, digestion, muscle mass or medical needs. A senior diet is not automatically suitable for every older animal; recommendations depend on the individual assessment.

Therapeutic and prescription diets

Veterinary diets can support the management of selected conditions involving the kidneys, urinary tract, digestive system, liver, skin, joints, diabetes and other health problems. These diets are not interchangeable, and the correct choice depends on an established or suspected diagnosis.

A therapeutic diet supports veterinary care but does not replace examination, medication or monitoring where these are required. Diet changes should be introduced carefully, and follow-up tests may be needed to evaluate response.

Food allergies and adverse food reactions

Skin or digestive signs can have many causes. When a food reaction is suspected, the vet may recommend a properly controlled elimination diet using a suitable novel or hydrolysed protein. For the trial to be meaningful, other foods, flavoured medicines and treats may need to be excluded for the recommended period.

Commercial, home-prepared and raw diets

Commercial foods should be complete and balanced for the intended life stage. Home-prepared diets can be deficient or excessive in essential nutrients unless formulated by an appropriately qualified veterinary nutrition professional. Raw feeding also carries nutritional and hygiene considerations, including bacterial risk to pets and people. We can discuss these options without judgement and focus on safety.

Why arrange nutrition advice at home?

A home visit allows the vet to understand your pet’s normal environment, feeding arrangements and practical limitations. Nutrition advice can often be combined with a comprehensive mobile veterinary health check.

Our mobile veterinary team serves Central London and surrounding areas from our base near Holborn, subject to availability.

Hands down the best vet experience I’ve ever had. From the moment I sent the first email enquiry, the communication was outstanding, prompt, clear, and incredibly reassuring. I felt fully informed before the appointment even began, which made all the difference given how nervous I was. Nuria responded with patience and detail, answering every concern in a way that showed deep care and professionalism.

On the day of the visit, everything ran smoothly. Dr Caésar arrived on time, was calm and respectful in the space, and treated my cat with genuine gentleness and skill. You can tell this is someone who truly understands animals and works from a place of experience and care, not just routine. The whole process, from vaccination to microchip, was done efficiently without ever feeling rushed. I felt seen, respected, and most importantly, my cat was in safe, capable hands. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this service to anyone who wants top-tier, compassionate, in-home care for their pet.

I can't thank them enough. Nuria was so supportive during our correspondence, she really put me at ease. Dr Cesar has restored my faith in vets. My Sherby was terrified of vets because of some bad experiences, and the way Dr Cesar handled him literally brought tears to my eyes....I can't thank him enough....he really loves animals! Thank you both 😊

Update: I cant praise their service enough! Every time they visit, they put me at ease, I highly recommend you give them a try. Dr Jose is wonderful with Sherby also and you can see and feel how much he cares for animals. Thank you again Nuria for taking care of everything for me, you are the best! 😊

Super attentive even during the mail booking process, arrived on time and even notified us there was an earlier spot to move the appt forwards - on arrival Vets asked very diligent questions about his documentation and prev treatments from the shelter - were very friendly with our cat Bobo, who felt comfortable the entire time even during examination - checked fur, teeth, eyes, heart, weight, hydration, response to toys/talk, and then advised us on nutrition and dental care, including the necessary blood tests for tartar removal (it’s a service they offer at home, so we’ll book that also). The main task was to carry out the three-months parasites vaccination, and they’ll remind us of the yearly vaccinations needed next spring. Lastly, they threw in a free nail clipping on all 4 paws!
The service was super convenient and the at-home vets very reassuring, especially as any other outside vets close to ours are booked up to 4 weeks in advance. Many thanks and see you soon for more help with Bobo!
