Dog and Cat Dental Checks at Home in London

Pet dental checks at home in London can identify signs of oral pain, gum disease and damaged teeth while your dog or cat remains in familiar surroundings. Home Vets London provides scheduled mobile veterinary assessments for pets whose owners want professional dental advice without an initial trip to a clinic.

Dental disease is common in adult and senior pets, but animals often continue eating despite discomfort. A veterinary oral examination can help determine whether home care is appropriate or whether your pet needs further investigation and treatment at a suitably equipped veterinary facility.

What does a home dental check include?

The vet will ask about eating habits, drooling, bad breath, chewing behaviour and any changes you have noticed. Where your pet allows, the examination may assess the teeth, gums, tongue and visible areas of the mouth.

The vet may look for plaque and tartar, inflamed or receding gums, loose or fractured teeth, retained baby teeth, oral masses and other abnormalities. Because an awake examination cannot reveal every surface or the structures beneath the gum line, it may not provide a complete diagnosis of dental disease.

Signs your pet may have dental disease

Arrange veterinary advice if you notice persistent bad breath, red or bleeding gums, visible tartar, excessive drooling, dropping food, chewing on one side, pawing at the mouth or reluctance to eat hard food. Facial swelling, a broken tooth or a sudden change in appetite also warrants prompt assessment.

Some pets show only subtle signs, such as becoming quieter, avoiding toys or resisting touch around the face. Regular checks are therefore useful even when an animal appears to be eating normally.

Dental care for dogs

Dogs can develop plaque, tartar and periodontal disease. Tooth fractures may also occur after chewing hard objects. The vet can assess visible problems, discuss suitable preventive care and explain whether a professional dental procedure is advisable.

Dental care for cats

Cats can experience gingivitis, periodontal disease, fractured teeth and painful tooth resorption. These conditions may be difficult to recognise at home. A cat that eats slowly, turns away from food, chatters its jaw or develops unusual drooling should be assessed by a veterinary professional.

Can dental treatment be completed at home?

A home visit is valuable for assessment, advice and planning, but comprehensive dental treatment generally requires facilities for anaesthesia, monitoring and dental imaging. Cleaning beneath the gum line, dental X-rays and extractions cannot be replaced by cosmetic removal of visible tartar from an awake pet.

If treatment is recommended, the vet will explain why it is needed and what the next steps may involve. Depending on your pet’s age and health, a clinical assessment and pre-anaesthetic blood tests may be advised before a procedure.

Looking after your pet’s teeth

Regular tooth brushing with pet-safe toothpaste is usually the most effective form of home dental care when a pet accepts it. Human toothpaste should not be used. Introduce brushing gradually and stop if your pet appears painful or distressed.

Dental diets, chews or other products may be useful for some pets, but suitability varies. Very hard items can damage teeth. The vet can recommend an approach based on your pet’s mouth, health, diet and temperament.

Why choose a dental assessment at home?

Home examinations can be particularly helpful for anxious dogs, nervous cats, senior animals and owners who find clinic travel difficult. Dental assessment can often be combined with a broader mobile veterinary health check, allowing the vet to consider oral findings alongside your pet’s general health.

Our mobile veterinary team serves Central London and surrounding areas from our base near Holborn, subject to appointment availability.

Hands down the best vet experience I’ve ever had. From the moment I sent the first email enquiry, the communication was outstanding, prompt, clear, and incredibly reassuring. I felt fully informed before the appointment even began, which made all the difference given how nervous I was. Nuria responded with patience and detail, answering every concern in a way that showed deep care and professionalism.

On the day of the visit, everything ran smoothly. Dr Caésar arrived on time, was calm and respectful in the space, and treated my cat with genuine gentleness and skill. You can tell this is someone who truly understands animals and works from a place of experience and care, not just routine. The whole process, from vaccination to microchip, was done efficiently without ever feeling rushed. I felt seen, respected, and most importantly, my cat was in safe, capable hands. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this service to anyone who wants top-tier, compassionate, in-home care for their pet.

Thank you both 😊

Update: I cant praise their service enough! Every time they visit, they put me at ease, I highly recommend you give them a try. Super attentive even during the mail booking process, arrived on time and even notified us there was an earlier spot to move the appt forwards - on arrival Vets asked very diligent questions about his documentation and prev treatments from the shelter - were very friendly with our cat Bobo, who felt comfortable the entire time even during examination - checked fur, teeth, eyes, heart, weight, hydration, response to toys/talk, and then advised us on nutrition and dental care, including the necessary blood tests for tartar removal (it’s a service they offer at home, so we’ll book that also). The main task was to carry out the three-months parasites vaccination, and they’ll remind us of the yearly vaccinations needed next spring. Lastly, they threw in a free nail clipping on all 4 paws!
The service was super convenient and the at-home vets very reassuring, especially as any other outside vets close to ours are booked up to 4 weeks in advance. Many thanks and see you soon for more help with Bobo!
