Veterinary Diagnostic Tests at Home in London

Veterinary diagnostic tests at home in London can help investigate changes in your dog or cat’s health without the added stress of travelling to a clinic. Home Vets London provides mobile veterinary assessments and can collect appropriate samples during a scheduled home visit when clinically suitable.

The veterinary surgeon will first review your pet’s history and carry out a clinical examination. Any recommended tests will be chosen according to the findings, symptoms, age, medication and individual circumstances. Samples may be sent to a professional external laboratory, and the vet will explain the expected process and follow-up.

Diagnostic tests available during a home visit

The tests suitable for your pet depend on their condition and on whether samples can be collected safely at home. Common investigations may include blood tests, urine testing, faecal testing, cytology and selected infectious-disease or travel-related tests.

Blood tests: haematology and biochemistry

Haematology examines the cellular components of blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It can provide useful information about conditions such as anaemia, inflammation, infection and some clotting abnormalities.

Biochemistry profiles help assess organ function and metabolic health. Depending on the profile requested, results may provide information about the liver, kidneys, glucose, proteins, electrolytes and other markers. Additional tests, such as thyroid or other hormone measurements, may be recommended when clinically indicated.

Blood testing can be useful for unwell pets, senior-pet health assessments, monitoring long-term medication and evaluating health before certain procedures. A result should always be interpreted alongside the clinical examination and medical history.

Urinalysis

Urine testing can contribute valuable information about the urinary system and wider health. Depending on the clinical question, analysis may include urine concentration, pH, glucose, protein, blood and examination of the sediment for cells, crystals or bacteria.

An abnormal result does not necessarily confirm a diagnosis by itself. Further testing, such as a urine culture or blood profile, may be recommended. We will advise you about the most appropriate way to collect a sample and whether a fresh sample is required.

Faecal testing

Faecal samples may be examined for intestinal parasites or other causes of gastrointestinal signs. If a sample is needed, the veterinary team will explain how much to collect, how to store it and how quickly it should be submitted. Some parasites and infections can also affect people, so appropriate hygiene is important.

Cytology and microscopic examination

Cytology involves examining cells collected from a lump, skin lesion, ear, fluid or another appropriate site. It may help identify inflammation, infection or the type of cells present. Cytology can guide the next step, but it does not always provide a definitive diagnosis; biopsy, imaging or referral may sometimes be needed.

Infectious-disease and travel-related testing

Selected tests may be available for infectious diseases such as feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV), depending on clinical need. We can also arrange certain laboratory tests needed for pet travel, including rabies antibody testing where applicable. Travel requirements vary by destination and date, so please contact us well in advance and see our pet export service.

What happens after samples are collected?

Samples are labelled and handled according to the type of investigation requested. Where laboratory analysis is required, turnaround times vary by test and laboratory. The veterinary team will discuss the results with you, explain what they may mean for your pet and recommend any appropriate treatment, monitoring or further investigation.

Some conditions cannot be fully investigated in the home and may require diagnostic imaging, hospital monitoring, specialist equipment or referral to a veterinary clinic. If this applies, we will explain the reasons and help you understand the recommended next step.

Why choose diagnostic testing at home?

A home visit can be particularly helpful for nervous cats, anxious dogs, senior pets and owners who find clinic travel difficult. Your pet can be assessed in familiar surroundings, and diagnostic sampling can often be combined with a comprehensive mobile veterinary health check.

Our mobile veterinary team serves Central London and surrounding areas from our base near Holborn, subject to availability.

Hands down the best vet experience I’ve ever had. From the moment I sent the first email enquiry, the communication was outstanding, prompt, clear, and incredibly reassuring. I felt fully informed before the appointment even began, which made all the difference given how nervous I was. Nuria responded with patience and detail, answering every concern in a way that showed deep care and professionalism.

On the day of the visit, everything ran smoothly. Dr Caésar arrived on time, was calm and respectful in the space, and treated my cat with genuine gentleness and skill. You can tell this is someone who truly understands animals and works from a place of experience and care, not just routine. The whole process, from vaccination to microchip, was done efficiently without ever feeling rushed. I felt seen, respected, and most importantly, my cat was in safe, capable hands. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this service to anyone who wants top-tier, compassionate, in-home care for their pet.

I can't thank them enough. Nuria was so supportive during our correspondence, she really put me at ease. Dr Cesar has restored my faith in vets. My Sherby was terrified of vets because of some bad experiences, and the way Dr Cesar handled him literally brought tears to my eyes....I can't thank him enough....he really loves animals! Thank you both 😊

Update: I cant praise their service enough! Every time they visit, they put me at ease, I highly recommend you give them a try. Dr Jose is wonderful with Sherby also and you can see and feel how much he cares for animals. Thank you again Nuria for taking care of everything for me, you are the best! 😊

Super attentive even during the mail booking process, arrived on time and even notified us there was an earlier spot to move the appt forwards - on arrival Vets asked very diligent questions about his documentation and prev treatments from the shelter - were very friendly with our cat Bobo, who felt comfortable the entire time even during examination - checked fur, teeth, eyes, heart, weight, hydration, response to toys/talk, and then advised us on nutrition and dental care, including the necessary blood tests for tartar removal (it’s a service they offer at home, so we’ll book that also). The main task was to carry out the three-months parasites vaccination, and they’ll remind us of the yearly vaccinations needed next spring. Lastly, they threw in a free nail clipping on all 4 paws!
The service was super convenient and the at-home vets very reassuring, especially as any other outside vets close to ours are booked up to 4 weeks in advance. Many thanks and see you soon for more help with Bobo!
