Parasite control is not one-size-fits-all. The appropriate product and frequency depend on your pet’s species, age, weight, health, lifestyle, travel history and exposure to other animals. Veterinary products must be selected and used correctly; treatments intended for dogs can be dangerous to cats.

Fleas

Fleas can cause itching, skin inflammation and allergic reactions, and they can transmit tapeworm. Because much of the flea life cycle occurs in the home, successful control may require treating every suitable pet and managing the environment as well as using an effective veterinary product.

Ticks

Ticks attach to the skin and can transmit disease. Risk varies with walking areas, season and travel. If you find a tick, it should be removed correctly without squeezing or leaving mouthparts embedded. The vet can advise on prevention appropriate to your pet’s exposure.

Roundworm and tapeworm

Intestinal worms may cause few visible signs, but some pets develop digestive problems, poor condition or other illness. Certain parasites can also affect people. Puppies, kittens, hunting pets, raw-fed animals and pets with flea exposure may need particular attention.

Lungworm and other risks

Dogs may encounter lungworm through slugs, snails or contaminated environments. Cats and travelling pets have different parasite risks. We assess the individual situation rather than recommending unnecessary treatment.

Signs that may require a veterinary examination

Arrange an assessment if your pet has persistent itching, hair loss, scabs, visible parasites, recurrent diarrhoea, vomiting, coughing, weight loss or a swollen abdomen. These signs can have many causes, so examination or diagnostic testing may be needed before treatment.

Choosing safe parasite treatment

The vet will confirm an accurate weight, review current medication and discuss how easy different formulations are to administer. Options may include spot-on products, tablets or other licensed preparations where appropriate. Never combine products or repeat a dose without veterinary advice, and tell us about any previous reaction.

Regular parasite planning can be discussed during a mobile veterinary health check or vaccination appointment. A home visit is particularly useful for pets that find travel stressful and for households with several animals.
